2016 Graduate Student
Grant Call for Proposals Now Open

GRIFFIN, Georgia – The Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program has released the 2016 Call for Proposals for Graduate Student Grants. Graduate Student Grants are one of the few sustainable agriculture research funding opportunities open to Ph.D. and Master’s students at accredited institutions in the Southern region. Proposal submission deadline is May 6, 2016 at 5:00 PM. EST.  Download the Call for Proposals on the Southern SARE website and carefully read the proposal application instructions. All of the guidelines, program goals, review criteria, and the submission process to apply for a Southern SARE Graduate Student Grant can be found within the Call for Proposals. Research projects that address issues of sustainable agriculture of current and potential importance to the Southern region are eligible for submission. Maximum funds awarded for projects are $11,000 for up to three years work on the student’s project. Visit the Southern SARE website for additional information on Graduate Student Grants. Farm Week

The Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T observes a milestone anniversary this year, with the 30th Annual Small Farms Week (SFW) celebration, scheduled for March 20-26, 2016. A&T, a land-grant institution with a mission of agricultural education and outreach, was founded in 1891 and is celebrating the 125th anniversary of that origin this year. Theme: Our Pride, Our Future WHAT: Small Farms Week is an annual observance of small-scale agriculture and the farmers that produce it. Farm tours; workshops on land retention, vegetable production, pastured poultry and season-extension practices and more; 2016 North Carolina Small Farmer of the Year announced. REGISTRATON REQUIRED * WHEN: Events on March 21, 22 & 23* SUPPORT: Qualifying farmers are eligible for financial support for an overnight stay to attend events. Agriculture Educator of the Year

Der Xiong, Extension agent in Catawba County, won the 2015 NC SARE Outstanding Sustainable Ag Educator of the Year at the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association's Sustainable Ag Conference.  Dr. Sanjun Gu presented the award to Der, siting her efforts with the region's Farm School, her ag service in the Hmong community, and general efforts to promote sustainable agriculture with her clients.  Congratulations, Der!
